Microphone Selection & Installation
Selecting the microphone

Legaltek has designed the LXM high gain pre-amplified microphone system specifically for use with the LX Digital DVD Interview Recording System. The LXM provides superior omni-directional pick-up with excellent linear frequency characteristics. In addition, the LXM microphone modules are directly powered by the LX pre-amplifier/compressor via the supplied cable.

The LXM is offered in a variety of disguise, tamper resistant and environmental housings. Configurations are available for mounting on both ceiling or on wall panels.

Two microphones can be installed for stereo recording. Stereo audio substantially increases the intelligibility of evidence recordings.

The stainless steel security housing works well in interview rooms or secure holding area where equipment vandalism may occur. The microphone element is mounted in a special chamber behind the plate protecting it from intrusion. Moisture resistant versions are available.

Installation

It is important that the microphone be positioned correctly based on the nature of interviews being conducted. If you are recording personnel interviews or the suspect intake area of your facility, microphone placement is not critical, as the conversation will most likely be conducted at a normal level. However, for obtaining the best recordings of children or whispering suspects, one microphone should be placed near or above the primary seating location.

To mount the LXM ceiling module, carefully drill a hole in the tile or plaster, taking care not to damage the immediate surrounding surface. Place the microphone element through the hole and secure with the retaining ring. Connect the female end of the supplied balanced audio cable to the microphone and the male end to the LX pre-amplifier/compressor.

The installation is complete.

The LXM wall mount and stainless security disguise housings are shipped with mounting hardware. Select a location between the wall support studs and trace the mounting ring for proper cut out. Cut the mounting hole and install the mounting ring. Fish the spade lug end of the supplied balanced audio cable from the ceiling down the wall and through the mounting ring. Make the appropriate cable connections on the microphone module rear terminal strip, (three spade lugs) according to the instructions. Carefully place the microphone into the wall-mounting ring and secure with the supplied fasteners. Connect the male end of the balanced audio cable to the LX pre-amplifier/compressor.

The installation is complete.

Microphone Enclosure Options
• Our proprietary data jack enclosure can be installed at table height near the interview subject for excellent pick up. The microphone

enclosure provides a clean tamper proof microphone solution for areas subject to vandalism.
• The microphone element is mounted in an acoustic isolation capsule behind a small tamper proof opening in the plate.
• An optional surface mount junction box with 6” adhesive wire channel is available for attaching the microphone enclosure to a solid
wall that cannot be wired internally.
• Regulated DC power for all High gain pre-amplified microphones is provided by the LX.
Camera Selection & Installation
Selecting the Camera:

Full room shot

The type of camera enclosure used for the full room shot, is determined by both the size of the room and the nature of the interviews to be conducted there. The full room camera is usually mounted above and diagonally across the room from the primary subject.

If the room is relatively small, with a high ceiling, a single ceiling mounted camera, such as a smoke detector, will not work well. The angle of view is much too steep. In this scenario, a wall mounted PIR, Thermostat or Sensor Light Switch enclosure will work best. Specify a 3.6mm lens for complete room coverage.

If the room is 8’ X 10’ or larger, the ceiling mounted camera will work well. Select the Smoke Detector or PIR enclosure with a 3.6mm lens compliment.

Rooms that are used exclusively for forensic interviews of children may feature cameras that are less covert. Small dome cameras with flush mount kits will not be noticed by young children.

Close up shot

If you require a close up shot of the primary subject, especially for picture in picture recordings, several options are available.

Again, the proper selection will be determined by room size. In larger rooms, where a PIR or Smoke Detector housing have been used for the full room shot, a Digital Thermostat or Data Jack enclosure with12mm lens compliment will work well for the tight shot. Position the close up camera across the table on the opposite wall from the subject to capture a nice head and upper shoulder shot.

The Smoke Detector enclosure may also be fitted with a 8mm or 12mm lens, for diagonal, overhead close up shots. In this scenario, it would be best to use the PIR or Thermostat for the full room shot.

Smaller rooms, using a PIR or Sensor Light Switch for the full room shot, are limited to the Data Jack or Digital Thermostat housing for the close up. Again, position the close up camera across the table on the far wall from the subject to capture a nice head and shoulder shot.

Installation

It is important that the camera be adjusted and positioned correctly before it is permanently installed. To simplify this process, set up the LX Digital DVD Interview Recording System on a table in the interview room. Connect one end of the DC/Video cable to the camera and the other end to the LX Video 1 input and the 12V regulated power adaptor. The LX can now be used as a monitor to correctly position the camera(s) before permanent mounting.

While watching the monitor, position the camera in the proposed location and make necessary adjustments. Mark the screw holes or trace the mounting ring for proper cut out. Legaltek includes mounting hardware with all cameras for normal installation scenarios. Mounting instructions are included with individual cameras.

Disconnect the DC/Video cable and install it in the wall or ceiling from the chosen camera location to the area where the LX will be permanently set up. Reconnect the DC/Video cable to the camera and to the LX Video IN and 12V regulated power adaptor.

The installation is complete.
